Winter Skincare
January 12th, 2012

Flakey, itchy, cracked, sore... are any of these symtoms you have seen in your skin this winter? Well, look no further, as long as you follow these simple steps, you will no longer have to see these side effects again!

1. EXFOLIATE

Using a loofah, exfoliate your body in the shower with a moisturizing body wash or soap. Try to stay clear of scrubs with abrasive grains as they will rip or break the skin. Exfoliate your face using a wet wash cloth and your daily facial cleanser. Do this two or three times a week, but no more. Exfoliating more then three times a week will actually break down your skin’s natural barrier, which will make your skin even more dry.

2. MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE

As the weather changes, so should your skincare. Using products that work for you in the summer, may not be enough in the winter. Try using a moisturizer that is oil-based instead of water-based, as oil will actually help create a layer on your skin that will retain more moisture then a cream or lotion that is water-based. (Many night creams are oil-based.) Using a moisturizer that contains a SPF during the day and the oil-based one overnight. Make sure you are applying your moisturizer TWICE a day as it will help keep the moisture in. Also, don’t forget your eyes! Apply a eye cream nightly right before bed, this will also help with lines, wrinkles and crow’s feet.

3. SUNSCREEN

No, sunscreen is not only just for those hot months! The sun is out daily, even if it is cloudy or snowing. The sun combined with the winter snow-glare can still cause damage to your skin! This is why it is crucial that you apply your sunscreen daily! Apply to both your face and neck after your moisturizer, 20-30 minutes prior to going outside. If you find you do not have time for all these steps every morning as you are a busy bee, you can find daily moisturizers with an SPF already built into them! We still suggest not being lazy and doing both steps, as it is more effective.

4. HOT BATHS AND SHOWERS

Try to ban having a hot shower or bath, we know it may feel incredible, but it sure doesn’t on your skin! The hot water breaks down the lipid barriers in your skin, which leads to a loss of moisture in your skin. Stick to just warm water for a shorter amount of time, your skin will thank you later.

Following these simple steps daily will help keep those nasty side effects away and help prevent wrinkles!
