My blonde, oily hair makes me and dry shampoo a perfect match. Still, dry shampoo is meant for the unprepared, so while having the storebought kind on hand is great, it isn’t always feasible. Here are some DIY solutions for quick clean (looking) hair:
Oatmeal & Baking Soda Dry Shampoo
- 1 cup of ground oatmeal
- 1 cup of baking soda
Combine ingredients. Massage into the oiliest parts of your hair and let the powder absorb the oil. Then, brush and shake out your hair to remove the mixture.
Almond & Cornmeal Dry Shampoo
- 2 tbsp. cornmeal/cornstarch
- 1 tbsp. ground almonds
- 1 tbsp. orris root
Mix ingredients in a small bowl. Massage 1 tsp. of the dry shampoo mixture into the scalp and then brush it out thoroughly. Repeat if hair still feels greasy. Note: Cornmeal has the largest granules of any of the base powders listed here. Make sure to brush your hair very thoroughly after using it.
Almond & Flour Dry Shampoo
- ½ cup white flour
- ½ cup ground almonds
Combine ingredients in a jar and shake to blend. Dust hair with the shampoo, massage gently into the scalp, then brush out.
If you have light-colored hair, you’re in luck: dry shampoo is absolutely perfect for your hair and super easy to do. While the above recipes will work great, those with light blonde hair can often get away with simply using flour, baby powder or baking soda all by itself. (Obviously, baby powder will produce the best scent.) Bonus: if you haven’t colored in a few weeks, white flour easily masks dark roots!
If you have dark hair, don’t worry: you can shampoo dry too. Just replace the base powders in any of these recipes with cocoa powder. (It’ll smell a lot yummier than the cornmeal too.)
